Interested in buying or selling Veneer Logs? Then please use the grading system below to correctly grade your logs!

AA Grade:
* Best wood quality offered

  • Very little to no gum or interior wood defects
  • Light, uniform color
  • Even, concentric texture (growth-rings)
  • No excessive sapwood
  • Minimum diameter of 18" at small end of log
Note: The taper of the log is taken into account when in double or triple lengths.
Example: A 20' 17" log will have a diameter of 18" back at 8'. This enables the log to make AA grade should the other grade criteria be met.
  • 4-side clean exterior free of pin-knots and in-grown bark
  • Straight with centered hearts and good form (twisted or fluted logs are not acceptable for this grade)

A Grade:

  • Minimal gum or interior defect.
  • Light color. Note: color is evaluated in this grade but is not as critical as in AA grade
  • Even, concentric texture (growth rings)
  • No excessive sap wood
  • Minimum diameter of 13" at small end of log
  • 4-side clean exterior with minimal amount of defect (pins or in-grown bark)

Note: The wood quality is comparable to the AA grade but in a smaller diameter. The largest percentage of logs in this grade will be less than 17 inches diameter at the small-end.

B Grade:

  • Acceptable proportions of scattered gum or other interior defects (bird peck, in-grown bark)
  • Wood color and texture are not taken into account for this grade
  • No ring gum.
  • Minimum diameter of 13" at small end of log
  • Straight with centered hearts
  • 4-sides clear with minimal exterior defects (limited in-grown bark, light pin-knots or figure are acceptable for this grade)
Note: the largest percentage of logs will be in 9 and 10 feet lengths or multiples of.

C Grade:

  • No interior wood defects that can lower the logs yield. (heavy ring gum or bird=peck that could cause ring shake.)
  • No excessive in-grown bark or large gum pockets
  • No large pin-knot clusters
  • Minimum diameter of 12" on the logs small-end
  • Minimum of 3 clear sides (no cut-off limbs allowed)
  • 4 side clear logs with interior wood defects not acceptable in B grade logs
  • Straight with good form
  • Butt logs or very clean second cut logs with good dimension
Note: No more than 20% second cut logs in any #3 grade parcel
No more than 20% of 12" and 13" diameter logs in any #3 grade parcel
  • Knots must be contained in one of the log's 4 faces. Knot size can not be larger than 25% of the log's diameter on the small end.
